On the ALA list yesterday or the day before, Mark Rosenzweig made a passing reference to an upcoming webinar on Iran organized by IRTF. I hadn't heard about that. Can someone share details? Thanks, Rory Litwin ------------------------------ Rory Litwin President Library Juice Academy He/Him/His ...

Al, thanks for this. SRRT can be credited with so much. I'll point out that your chapter covers more than resolutions, in terms of SRRT's work over the years. I wanted to ask something. You mentioned a while ago that there were a few cases where SRRT issued official statements that were not in the form ...

Thanks, that's very helpful. Does that list live somewhere public?

Hello everybody, I feel like over the years SRRT has lent its support to efforts of other organizations by signing statements, open letters, declarations, etc. It seems like it's something that we have done fairy quickly at meetings, and the follow up has presumably been the communication with the ...

Mark, thank you for laying this out clearly. I had forgotten a lot of this. I think that it's some of the archaic language - "whereas," "therefore be it resolved" - that can make it seem like these resolutions must be something obsolete. I disagree about that sort of language adding gravity. However, ...

Thanks. Can I just ask for it to be included on the agenda now, so that it will be in the draft agenda? Also, can I ask for a member of Action Council, if they would agree to it, to make a motion at the meeting that we close the permissions on the SRRT Connect group so that only ALA members who are logged ...

Hey, all. What is happening with the privacy settings of this group in Connect? We started talking about it, but then we stopped, and the settings seem to have been unchanged. Did we make a decision that resulted in that or did it just get dropped? Thanks, Rory ------------------------------ Rory ...

Hi April, Thanks for sharing the survey. I guess I wasn't paying attention when it was originally done. At any rate, I know I had not looked at the results. I think the survey is useful to this discussion. A lot of people had complaints that mirror things that Tara and others have been saying. There ...

Perhaps this has already been discussed, but it seems to me like it would be a good time to run a survey of SRRT members, to see what their priorities are. Among other questions, people could be asked to rank SRRT activities in order of importance. I don't think elections or participation at meetings ...

I agree with what Mark R. has said here as well, and I have a couple of small points to add. First, I want to support Mark's approach to dealing with this issue, and say that I think it's wholly appropriate to use this discussion list to expound an argument about what is happening in ALA. It shouldn't ...

Renee Tanner posted something to the main ALA group that we shouldn't sleep on: Dear ALA Members, The ALA Working Group for the Interpretation of the Core Value of Equity seeks your input on the draft interpretation. For background, the interpretations are written from the perspective of library ...

There is a discussion on the ALA Members Connect group about the public nature of Connect, and the privacy implications of group settings. It seems that a lot of groups, including this one, have the group settings in Connect set to "public," but may not be aware that the result of this is that our posts ...

Hm. I read the report, and I have to question the appropriateness of this kind of staff interference in a member group's activities. Yes, there may be legal limitations on a member group, as far as committing the association to positions or expenditures, but beyond that, it's a member group and has a ...

In light of the discussion of pending changes to Action Council's composition that we've been told about, and in light of the Trump administration's stated intention of coming down on "left wing" nonprofits, and in light of the ALA's radical planning process to deal with its structural financial deficit, ...

I think one thing that SRRT could do would be to have another "Afternoon of Social Justice" webinar event, and use it to address these topics. I think it could be a useful format for this. I agree with Mark about the importance of this, but want to highlight that it's not about any single statement ...

I missed the virtual SRRT meeting yesterday, and I wish I had seen it, because from the outside it looks like some very important things are going on. One very brief comment: As uncomfortable as things are, I think the bright spot is that there is now a critical mass of newer members who are proving ...
