Bio

Federico Martínez-García Jr. is currently the Head of Public Services and Associate Librarian at the University of Portland in Portland, Oregon.

He is the third-youngest from a family of 9 born in Mexico. He moved with his family to the US at age of 16, a first-generation immigrant and college graduate. He holds a double bachelor's in Spanish and French from the University of Arizona; a Master's in Information and Library Sciences from the same institution; and a Master's in Public Administration from Arizona State University. He has worked in libraries for 20+ years where he started as a Student Worker.

His library experience includes Interlibrary Loan, Circulation, Reserves, Collection Management, Special Collection, Reference, and Instruction.  Previous working institutions include the University of Colorado Colorado Springs; the University of Missouri; Arizona State University; Pima County Public Library; and the University of Arizona. He didn’t know there was a career in librarianship until 1999 when he started working as a student worker at the University of Arizona Libraries. Since then, he has been passionate about providing seamless access to information. He is also interested in Social Justice, Diversity, Inclusion, equity, and Copyright.

He is a philosopher and he knows people serve as educators and continuous learners throughout life. Discovering something new is his goal every day. There are no insignificant questions as they inspire research. He is happy, optimistic, calm, and procrastinator at times. One of his biggest secrets in the profession is that he doesn’t read for pleasure… but he promotes reading!
