As a cataloger for ProQuest, Part of Clarivate and diversity reading columnist for the Special Libraries Association, I think replacing LCSH with Homosaurus for LBGTQ subjects is a great idea! I think the Homosaurus vocabulary is much richer than LCSH and allows for a more description of people. ...

I agree that any degree that uses research is helpful for a library science degree. My psychology research in undergrad helped me navigate a lot of research databases in my MLS program! Elizabeth Boniface

Depending on the association, you don't always have to attend conferences to network. The Special Libraries Association has local chapters with happy hours and panel discussions people can attend in their area. When the pandemic hit, these events became virtual. State library associations also have ...

I don't think your major really matters in preparing for an MLS. I think you should do what you feel passionate about. I majored in psychology and excelled in my MLS. However, I think English would be a good choice if you want to work with books in any case . Hope this helps! Sincerely, Elizabeth ...

I agree that getting good grades can contribute. Because I got good grades early on and have high expectations of myself, I tend to be more critical of myself when I am unsure of what I am supposed to be doing. Elizabeth Boniface

I've definitely felt it, both when I started graduate school and others had much more experience than me, and when I started new jobs and felt like everyone else was doing better than me. I also felt it a bit in college when I felt like others were taking more impressive classes than me. I try to remind ...

As a White female who wears glasses for computer work/driving and often wears her hair in a ponytail, I probably look the librarian part more than a lot of others. My keen attention to detail and love for organization makes me a great cataloger, but my extroverted personality defies cataloger stereotypes. ...

You could see if any libraries are looking for volunteer catalogers to help a couple hours a week. Or you could join the CORE division of ALA, which has a lot of free webinars on cataloging topics. I hope this helps! Sincerely, Elizabeth Boniface
I would assume it would be faster than original cataloging. Our average is 3-6 records per hour for original cataloging and 6-10 records per hour for copy cataloging. I think just affixing barcodes would be faster than either of those. I hope this helps! Sincerely, Elizabeth Boniface

I agree that the use of "illegal aliens" is harmful. It equates undocumented immigrants with extraterrestrial beings, and "illegal" implies that they did something wrong while in reality, it can sometimes be impossible for immigrants to procure the necessary documents due to bureaucracy. "Undocumented ...

I wish I'd taken more in depth cataloging classes. I just took the intro course. I learned my cataloging knowledge through continuing Ed classes and on the job. Liz
