  • 1.  Liaison report: CC:DA

    Posted Jul 07, 2025 01:01 PM

    Dear MIG colleagues,

I am posting here a liaison report that I gave in-person at last week's ALA Annual Conference on the recent activities of the Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access (CC:DA).

    Quick announcements:

    • I have been in this role since 2019 and am ready to step aside.  My term ends in June 2026 after ALA Annual in Chicago. Please contact me and / or the MIG board if you are interested in coming on board!  After a long pause related to the 3R project, RDA revisions are ramping up again, and I anticipate that CC:DA will get especially active in 2026-2027 as the PCC implementation deadline for Official RDA approaches.

    • Reminder: any CORE member can participate in CC:DA Task Forces, working groups, etc., so please volunteer!  I am trying to alert MIG members via Connect as opportunities arise.  I also welcome feedback from all MIG members on RDA revision proposals that I send to the MIG membership on Connect.  Anyone can also join the CC:DA Public Space on Connect.  Also, MIG or any MIG members are welcome to draft RDA Discussion Papers and Revision Proposals.  CC:DA just approved a new guide on the process -- the CC:DA chair is happy to help

    CC:DA Updates

    • After Annual, Kathy Glennan will rotate off as CC:DA chair, and Karl Pettit will become the new chair.

    • Some items from meeting Sat. 28 June.  Note that full Liaison reports are posted in the Library tab of the CC:DA Public Space on ALA Connect.

      • Chair may be reconsidering the need for in-person participation for liaisons and members / whether to have in-person meetings, in case this is a barrier for broader participation

      • Many liaison opportunities: Society of American Archivists (SAA), Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL), ALA Continuing Resources Section, Music Libraries Association, IFLA, Subject Advisory Committee (SAC), Association of Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC)

      • Library of Congress (LC) Updates on their BIBFRAME adoption / the  MARVA BIBFRAME editor / ILS migration to FOLIO.  Will form a task force with Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) to explore issues around full adoption of Unicode in NACO Program / LC Name Authorities

      • OCLC: noted that BIBFRAME editor has been in development, contact Anne Washington (OCLC) for more information; update on machine learning de-duplication project in WorldCat.

      • Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC Update): please submit comments on PCC AI white paper by 1 August

      • Rare Book and Manuscript Section (RBMS) will add policy statements for DCRMR to the Official RDA Toolkit soon; is embarking on a second revision of ARM ontology, which is a BIBFRAME extension for art and rare materials.

      • North American RDA Committee (NARDAC): see the RDA Steering Committee (RSC) white paper on Considering AI in the growth of RDA, which has been released and is open for comment; Regnal numbers proposal approved; a revision proposal concerning some text in the Corporate Bodies instructions in the Official RDA Toolkit is open for comments; RSC public meetings: 15 July, 18 November ; Latin American Region is  joining RSC; openings on the RSC: RSC Chair,  Wider Community Engagement Officer, and a Music Advisory Group to be formed

      • CC:DA Personal Names Task Force will have a revision proposal on personal names -- compound surnames shortly.  Stay tuned for more details!

      • Welcome materials: now posted to the Library tab of the ALA Connect public space for CC:DA.  See the "Main" folder in the library.  Once the documents are approved by Core, they can also be added to the ALA Institutional Repository (ALAIR).

      • The committee will start posting various documents to the Library tab of the ALA Connect public space for CC:DA ; these are typically working documents, including liaison reports for our meetings, task force reports, and that sort of document, which may need either a permanent place to reside, or may be posted to the Library tab until it is possible to add a final document to ALAIR.  For less formal documents, the Workspace tab may be used.

    • Some items from CC:DA meeting on Mon. 30 June 2025

      • RDA Toolkit Update (James Hennelly) -- similar to the presentation given at the NARDAC update forum. Some highlights: various registry (or partial) translations of RDA Toolkit have been announced, including Turkish, simplified and traditional Chinese.  Full translations in Spanish, Catalan, Hungarian, and Arabic are nearing completion.  There is great interest from Eastern Europe, and the Latin American Region is joining the RDA Steering Committee, joining the other regional RDA Groups, including NARDAC (North America), EURIG (Europe), and Oceania.  The original RDA Toolkit will be retired on 11 May 2027; a countdown clock will appear on the website banner beginning  in May 2026. New Zealand has many training resources freely available from their recent implementation of official RDA

      • Multiple RDA proposals will be released for feedback in the coming weeks and months, including several emerging from the work of Extent Task Force, and a  proposal from the Religions Working Group. It is likely that CC:DA will issue proposals stemming from the work of its Personal Names Task Force, and a proposal from its community on the format of notated music for use in choreographic resources.  NARDAC may also issue a proposal on relationship terms for family members, e.g. sibling.

      • Two task forces were discharged: Personal Names and Documentation

      • Two task forces were approved: a task force to review the IFLA accessibility metadata guidelines, and a task force to help draft a proposal on familial relationships.  I will send details and a call for members once they are posted.

    • Virtual Midwinter CC:DA Meeting scheduled for 5-6 Feb. 2026, 1:00-4:00PM Eastern

    • Activities since the virtual midwinter meeting:

      • Task forces

        • Personal Names: still active and working

        • Task Force to Develop a Welcome Package for CC:DA Members: has developed some documents, including an Orientation document for new members, a guide to RDA change proposals, and others, which have been posted to the Library in the CC:DA Public Space on ALA Connect (See details above in the section on the 28 June meeting)
