Hi Kathy:
Thank you so much for forwarding me RSC/NARDAC/2025/3 via email. Revision of two sets of condition and condition options for Corporate Body: variant access point for corporate body aims to simplify guidance and provide a more streamlined process for creating variant access points in the context of corporate bodies. However, in trying to harmonize the instructions and reduce complexity, there is a risk of oversimplification that could lead to inconsistent practice or loss of critical nuance, particularly in regard to adding access points for subordinate corporate body.
The recommendation proposes adapting the boilerplate phrase from Person: variant access point-"Record a name in direct order with no amendments." While consistency across entity types can be beneficial, corporate bodies often have more complex naming conventions than persons. The instruction language might oversimplify the challenges involved in recording corporate names. Without additional context or examples, catalogers might misapply or overlook necessary amendments specific to corporate naming practices.
The proposed changes should be accompanied by a few clear examples, and at the same time, tested by catalogers. User feedback could reveal whether moving instructions to the Format section (in Recommendation 2) improves accessibility for corporate bodies, and whether the deletion of explicit instructions (in Recommendation 1) leaves gaps in practical guidance.
Thanks a lot for your consideration!!!
Amanda
