None of the existing terms in the RDA File Type vocabulary encoding scheme seem appropriate to describing files consisting of notated music or other non-alphanumeric notation systems. As a result, the MLA Best Practices for RDA have conspicuously avoided addressing the file type element in the context of electronic score cataloging. As cataloging of electronic scores becomes more common, this lacuna has become more obvious. The RSC has indicated that vocabulary additions can normally be accommodated using fast-track procedures. However, as adjusting the definitions of existing terms may raise broader questions about the intended purpose and scope of this VES, further discussion may be warranted. This paper recommends creating a new term rather than revising existing terms.
