Annual 2019 "Practical Linked Data in the Classroom" Presentations

Jul 10, 2019 04:23 PM

The session was held on Saturday 21 June 2019 from 1-2 pm at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. There were over 150 people in attendance. The session began with Paul Frank discussing some of the lessons learned with training practicalities for teaching linked data at the Library of Congress. Mr. Frank's presentation is
Teaching Linked Data: Practicalities / presented by Paul Frank, Coordinator, NACO and SACO Programs at Library of Congress. Frank stressed that a cataloger can work with linked data without understanding the underlying technology.

Following Mr. Frank, Tina Schrader provided her perspectives and experiences with teaching linked data at the National Library of Medicine. Ms. Shrader's presentation is: Pavlov's Cataloger and Schrödinger's Data: Teaching Linked Data at NLM / Tina Shrader, Head, Unit 1, Cataloging and Metadata Management Section, Technical Services Division, National Library of Medicine. A major take-away from Mr. Shrader's presentation is the idea that the i
ntellectual work of identity management will be the main cataloging task once the linked data environment is fully formed.

Both presentations provide a wealth of resources that interested parties may connect to now, as well as a variety of examples of projects that can aid in learning about or contribute to the realization of linked data both in the LIS classroom and in the workplace.

Both presenters stressed that playing with Wiki Data is one of the best ways to learn and contribute linked data.
