Annual 2008 meeting report

Dec 16, 2009 12:05 PM

About 65 people attended this meeting to hear presentations from John Espley (VTLS) and Jennifer Bowen (eXtensible catalog).

John updated the attendees on the latest developments at VTLS in creating FRBR-ized records in a catalog, with a demonstration of records with Mark Twain as an author.  While a great deal of progress has been made in linking records for Works, Expressions, and Manifestations, a great deal remains.  When working with legacy data (i.e., data not created with a view to FRBR-ization), manual intervention is still necessary for records lacking uniform titles and other data useful for identifying the Group 1 entities.  VTLS has had some success on relating parts of collections but more work is still needed.  In addition, musical sound recordings with many works and expressions are still not successfully linked without manual intervention.

Jennifer provided an update on the eXtensible Catalog Project at the University of Rochester.  The project is continuing with the expectation of a functional prototype on the Web by mid-2009. Although it is an integral portion of the demonstration, work on FRBR has not yet progressed far but is expected in the next few months.

In a short business meeting, I offered to step down as chair of the group since I am no longer actively involved with FRBR.  Rice Majors (III) volunteered to be chair, and Tami Morse McGill (Univ of Wyoming) to be chair-elect, beginning immediately. Their contact information is--
