Dear OCLC Community,
Please note: If you are subscribed to multiple lists, you may see this message more than once. We apologize for any duplicate messages.
The Library of Congress (LC) recently announced the expansion of non-Latin script input in bibliographic and authority records, beginning with Phase I languages to be implemented between October 2025 and Spring 2026. This expansion includes Armenian, Thai, Mongolian, extended Cyrillic, all CJK Unicode characters, and some Indigenous North American languages, in addition to the previously announced scripts for Phase I languages (Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Panjabi, Kannada, Konkani, Malayalam, Sinhalese, Tamil, Telugu, Tibetan, Devanagari-based languages, Burmese, and Kurdish).
OCLC is working closely with LC to ensure that records distributed to OCLC are correctly rendered in their original scripts.
Script Status
We will roll out support for scripts as they are validated for use. Details and known issues will be updated regularly on our documentation page.
Initially, some scripts validate and export successfully, but some minor display irregularities (e.g., dotted circles, spacing issues) may occur in certain interfaces. We are working to improve rendering; in the interim, it may help to use Nirmala UI or Noto Sans fonts in Connexion 3.1 as it has fewer display irregularities than Connexion 2.63. WorldShare Record Manager is also an alternative that may improve rendering.
Important Reminders
Export records containing these scripts in UTF-8 format in Connexion 2.63, Connexion 3.1, WorldShare Record Manager, or WorldShare Collection Manager. MARC-8 export does not support these scripts.
Next Steps
We are committed to full support of LC's script expansion, and our goal is to ensure that as libraries contribute records with scripts, that these integrate seamlessly across OCLC's systems.
We appreciate your patience and partnership as we work toward full support for these scripts.
