Thanks to everyone who joined us last week for a great discussion around DEI-related issues. Here are some summary notes of our conversation:

    1. Recruitment and retention of diverse candidates continues to be a challenge

    2. One of the biggest issues is around being able to provide experiences for MLIS students who are finishing up programs and having some on the job time before graduation-some institutions offer trainee programs

    3. We also discussed various challenges associated with diversity residencies and the precarious employment conditions that typically occur with temporary positions

    4. Some institutions are offering full-time jobs after the residency

    5. We also discussed mentorship and ensuring that there are clear projects and expectations of what individuals in these roles can do-ideally their interests are matched with the work being offered

    6. We then shifted the conversation to discussing retention issues as well which circle back to organizational culture and how well DEI initiatives are integrated into the work of the library and supported
