Below is the abstract for this proposal. Please see the attached for the full proposal and comment no later than Monday, December, 22, 2025.

    Abstract

As a subelement of Manifestation: extent of manifestation, the proposed element Manifestation: extent of embodied content and its subtypes are used to record measurements of the layout of content that is embodied in a manifestation.

Recommendation 1: Create the element Manifestation: extent of embodied content.

Comment: Generally agree - but where is the text of the instructions? This proposal stops after the definition & Prerecording section. For suggested new elements, I expected to see the full text, even if it is as brief as note on collective agent. To fully understand how all of these proposals interrelate, the full context would be helpful.

Recommendation 2. Manifestation: configuration of playback channels [replace with designation of number of sound channels, and, number of sound channels]

Generally agree, with the following comments:

Recommendation 2.2: Recommendation 2.2: Separate from Manifestation: configuration of playback channels the element Manifestation: designation of number of sound channels, retaining it as a subtype of Manifestation: sound characteristic.

This proposal is bumping into a long standing problem with recorded sound resources -- distinguishing between information about the capture of the sound & the playback of that sound. If I'm thinking about WEMI correctly, capture would be at the expression level and playback would be at the manifestation level. Thus, I don't agree with the following proposal:

Definition for new element Manifestation: designation of number of sound channels: A general designation of the number of sound channels used to make a recording.

I think this needs to be specifically about playback, not capture (which is how I understand, "make a recording"). This is a problem with the current wording as well (in configuration of playback channels), but at least there it is in an element that is specific to "playback".

Recommendation 2.3: Separate from Manifestation: configuration of playback channels the element Manifestation: number of sound channels, retaining it as a subtype of Manifestation: sound characteristic.

This has the same capture vs. playback problem as Recommendation 2.2.

Recommendation 3. Manifestation: image resolution [current label: resolution]

    Agree.

Recommendation 4. Add Manifestation: reduction ratio as a subtype of Manifestation: extent of embodied content.

Agree. [I am assuming nothing changes with the existing instructions for this element, although that is not stated explicitly.]

Recommendation 5: Add Manifestation: reduction ratio designation as a subtype of Manifestation: extent of embodied content.

Agree. [I am assuming nothing changes with the existing instructions for this element, although that is not stated explicitly.]

Recommendation 6. Manifestation: dimensions of embodied content

The 1st paragraph under this recommendation says, "This element will absorb the elements related to the dimensions of pictorial or cartographic areas Manifestation: dimensions of still image and Manifestation: dimensions of cartographic image." However, a presentation of what that actually looks like is not part of this proposal, and I would have preferred to see it all.

Recommendation 7: Create a new vocabulary encoding scheme RDA Layout Unit of Embodied Content.

Generally agree, with the following comments:

7.2 Frame: Proposed definition: A layout of embodied content where content is arranged in two or more blocks, separated by horizontal or vertical gutters.

I really don't understand what this is referring to. An example (at least in the explanatory text leading to this recommendation) would help, following the example of what was done to contextualize the new term "line".

7.4 Page: Proposed definition: A layout of embodied content where content is embodied on one side of a leaf or sheet.

I think that two uses of "embodied" in this definition is problematic. I see that the proposed definition for "frame" uses "arranged" instead of "embodied" for the 2nd occurrence here. Would that substitution also work for "page"?

I overall support the proposal but agree with Kathy's observations about Recommendations 2.2 and 2.3.
