    Below is the abstract for this proposal. Please see the attached for the full proposal and comment no later than Monday, December, 22, 2025.

    Abstract

    As subelements of Manifestation: extent of manifestation, the proposed elements Manifestation: number of containers and Manifestation: dimensions of container are used to record quantifications and measurements of containers in a manifestation. An RDA vocabulary encoding scheme for Containers is established, with some terms pulled from the RDA Carrier Extent Unit vocabulary encoding scheme. The proposed subelement Manifestation: extent of storage space is used for a measurement of the storage space occupied by a collection manifestation. The term container appears twice in the RDA Glossary appears twice and the definitions can be consolidated into the term in RDA Recording Source.

    I generally support this proposal.

    The proposal goes into some detail about the two existing definitions of "container" in official RDA. However, it appears that this problem was previously solved by the RSC. The RDA Terms vocabulary does not hold the second definition at this time, nor are the two definitions in the Glossary. Thus, the proposed change to "container" under Recommendation 1 is simply to add the 2nd paragraph (as described on p. 2 of this proposal). This is fine with me.

    Recommendation 2: Create the element Manifestation: number of containers

    The last paragraph here says: Current instructions for recording the number of containers are at https://access.rdatoolkit.org/en-US_ala-8754c7a9-c38c-3735-9cf9-865df717f81b/p_evs_3cz_xdb but it is entangled with recording the number of items and volumes in a collection. These instructions will need to move to Community Resources given the string encoding schemes needed to construct values.

    That leaves unexplained what instructions will appear in this element (after the definition and Prerecording sections). To truly understand how all of these proposals interrelate, the full context would be helpful.

    I support this proposal, and would just note the following sentence on page one should be corrected:  "The term container appears twice in the RDA Glossary appears twice and the definitions can be consolidated into the term in RDA Recording Source."

    I have a general question as to why the Extent Working Group is choosing to define Manifestation:dimensions of container as a subelement of Manifestation:Manifestation Extent Statement, rather than of Manifestation:dimensions?
