The MARC Advisory Committee midwinter meeting was held from January 31-February 2, 2023.

MAC considered four proposals and four discussion papers:

Proposal No. 2023-01: Defining a New Field to Record Electronic Archive Location and Access in the MARC 21 Formats

The proposal was approved with some minor revisions. Subfield $d will be named Date range of archived material instead of Archived content date range.

Proposal No. 2023-02: Adding Subfield $3 to Field 041 in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format

    The proposal was approved.

Proposal No. 2023-03: Adding Subfields $0, $1, $2, and $5 to Fields 720 and 653 in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format

The proposal was approved, with the exception of the addition of subfield $2.

Proposal No. 2023-04: Defining a Field for Ownership and Custodial History in Structured Form in the MARC 21 Formats

The proposal was approved with revisions. The changes are outlined in a post on the MARC Forum discussion list: https://listserv.loc.gov/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind2302&L=MARC&P=722. The first indicator value will now be a privacy indicator.  The second indicator will be undefined.  Type of ownership and custodial history information will, instead of an indicator value, be recorded in subfield $o.  Subfields $i and $j for dates in structured and unstructured forms have been changed to $k and $l.

Discussion Paper No. 2023-DP01: Defining a New Subfield in Field 264 to Record an Unsubfielded Statement in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format

There was considerable opposition to this paper, but it will come back as a proposal at the annual meeting this summer.

Discussion Paper No. 2023-DP02: Adding Subfields $0 and $1 to Field 658 of the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format

This paper was approved as a fast-track proposal.

Discussion Paper No. 2023-DP03: Renaming and Redefining Field 368 Subfield $d in the MARC 21 Authority Format

This paper was approved as a fast-track proposal, with a minor revision in the redefinition of subfield $d:

A term indicative of rank, honor, or office. This includes designations indicative of royalty, nobility, ecclesiastical rank or office, terms of address for a person of religious vocation, and initials or abbreviations representing an academic degree or membership in an organization. It excludes terms of address that only indicate gender or marital status such as Mr. or Mrs.

Discussion Paper No. 2023-DP04: Attributes of Family in the MARC 21 Authority Format

This paper will come back as a proposal at the summer meeting.  Although preference for one of the two options presented for recording other attributes of family was split, the majority expressed a preference for option 1, defining a new subfield $d in field 376.  There was also preference for using the phrase "person, family, or corporate body" rather than "agent" in field and subfield definitions.
