Report from the Metadata Standards Committee

  • 1.  Report from the Metadata Standards Committee

Dear Core Metadata Interest Group Members,
Below is a summary of work completed by the Metadata Standards Committee. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments -- I am happy to bring them to the group.
In an effort to meet our charge to education on standards, the primary work of the committee this year has included organizing a Core presentation on the Metadata Schema Assessment Framework published by the Committee in the ALA Institutional Repository. Presenters included both current and past members of the Committee.  The presentation was held on March 31st, 2025. It had been publicized in various listservs and was well attended with 167 attendees of the 340 registrants. The recording and slides were made available to the wider membership following the presentation.

We plan to create and maintain a schedule to review feedback and make revisions on the Schema Assessment Framework in sustainable intervals. Discussion will continue on the best way to solicit use cases and examples of the Framework's use to improve overall understanding of how this tool can be integrated into project planning workflows.

We have worked asynchronously on updating the ALCTS Standards LibGuide.  Work included reviewing current content and making changes to format to improve readability. The draft of two sections of the updated ALA Core Standards LibGuide (Cataloging and Metadata Management & Continuing Resources) are near completion. This work will continue with the incoming committee. Once complete, MSC plans to reach out to other ALA committees who may be interested in the LibGuide to solicit comments and feedback.

MSC suspended their comments on NISO practices for this cycle because ALA's membership in NISO was not active throughout the year, and we did not have a liaison. Membership has been continued through ALA, and we expect to establish a new liaison for the 2025-2026 cycle.
