What advice would you give library administrators who are having issues recruiting staff, particularly supervisors? Also, what recruitment methods or strategies have you found to be most helpful pre-COVID and now?

Thank you all in advance for your thoughts.

    Sincerely,
    Hilary

    Hello Hilary:

Generally speaking, it seems that wage scales are a primary obstacles for recruiting, especially for publicly-funded institutions.  Promoting non-salary benefits can work, too – things like benefits, opportunities for flexible or hybrid work schedules, reduced commutes during periods of high gas prices, happy work environment, nearby food options, free parking, etc.

The best advice I've got is to develop opportunities for line staff to be trained (and mentored) into supervisors whenever possible. They know the work, often making them ideal supervisors for the lower level, entry-pay positions.

    Best,

    Erik
