About this Group

Purpose: Discusses the theory and applications related to subject terminology intended for faceted application, including FAST (Faceted Application of Subject Terminology), AAT (Art and Architecture Thesaurus), LCGFT (Library of Congress Genre/From terms), and others. Serves as a forum for users and others interested in the faceted approach to subject access to compare notes and discuss further developments and implementation of subject faceting for digital projects and related topics.

This interest group is part of Core's Metadata and Collection Section.

    Hello everyone,

    I had the honor of being invited as a guest to the FAST Policy and Outreach Committee (FPOC) Meeting in October. I would like to provide you with a recap of the meeting to share some updates. Feel free to reach out with any questions or comments.

    FAST ideas

    ·       FAST Open Refine Reconciliation Service has been postponed for further review, considering the preferences and expectations of FPOC in relation to Open Refine and FAST.

    ·       Case studies on successful implementations or migrations to FAST to be published.

    ·       The existence of FAST Funnel – You can request FAST terms to be updated through this Funnel. Click here for more information https://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/saco/FASTfun.html.

    ·       Currently discussing the possibility of enabling direct contributions to FAST.

    ·       FAST modernization at OCLC.

    ·       Transitioning away from utilizing FAST for LC Classification is a subject that requires additional discussion and clarification, starting from August.

    Membership recruitments

    ·       SAC Liaison (starting from January 2024) – ALA membership required. You can self-nominate using this form by November 20, 2023, if interested.

    ·       New co-chair for FPOC – Kim Mumbower.

    ·       New committee members – There are several members whose terms will expire in December. You can self-nominate using this form by November 20, 2023, if interested.
