Hi All,
We are hosting an online Brown Bag on Thursday, February 26 entitled: Analytics and Batch Editing using Pymarc: an Amateur's Code for Accessible Starting Points. This is the first in a five-part, recorded Brown Bag series on using pymarc for collections assessment and metadata quality control, including batch processing. The event is free! Our speaker is Emily Fidelman, Head of Metadata Services at West Virginia University.
During this informal presentation, Emily will demonstrate how to use Google Colab as a low to no cost development environment in which you can use the "pymarc" python library, especially with SQLite, to complete analytics on MARC records.
In this opening session, Emily will show how to produce key analytics including: (1) extracting ISBN's for your whole collection, which many libraries submit to vendors for a variety of reasons; (2) ACRL statistical survey counts of books, serials, and media for print collections, which many academic libraries complete annually; and (3) extracting holdings for submission to HathiTrust in order to participate in their Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS). Though tied to specific applications, scripts for these reports offer a range of approaches to using pymarc for extracting platform-independent insights from an entire collection's MARC metadata.
Our next session, Collections Assessment II: Bibliometrics (Tuesday, March 24th @ 11 am Central) , will focus on identifying and analyzing specific works or subsets within a collection, for example for accreditation reporting or a "diversity audit."
