  • 1.  Proposal to Add Familial Relationship Elements to Official RDA

    Posted 4 hours ago

    Hi all,

As I prepare the official proposal that will be submitted to NARDAC on the committee's behalf I would appreciate a few more eyes and opinions on some of the write up. I have listed below the specific recommendations that CC:DA approved related to familial relationship elements that we would like to see added to RDA. I split them up into seven separate recommendations to make it easier for NARDAC (and the RSC) to vote on hoping that even if there are some with questions the ones without questions could go forward and hopefully be implemented. One of the things I would like your assistance with relates to the Element Reference section for each element. I did my best to determine where in MARC these elements might be used but I could use other's opinions to verify, change, or offer additions to this area.

    Hi Karl-

We either have a problem of missing elements (inverses that are mentioned but not proposed: relative of,  spouse of, and sibling of), or a problem of incorrect references to inverses for those elements.

I think it's the latter. For example, see how "colleague" is currently treated in Official RDA. It includes this as the last sentence: For the inverse of this element, see Person: colleague.

Thus, I recommend changing the inverse references for relative, spouse and sibling to remove the "of".
