Small-Team Project Management with Big Goals: The Bigelow Digitization Project at Union College
In July 2021, Union College's Schaffer Library received a grant from the National Archives and Records Administration to digitize and make available the John Bigelow collection. This two-year grant provided the opportunity for our small cross-functional digital collections team to digitize, describe, and re-house more than 22,000 letters, diaries, and other items of the collection. At the same time, we launched a new digital collections system to provide access to the content. The team needed to flex around huge challenges, from COVID restrictions to staff turnover to technical debt. Our presentation will talk more about how we used project management techniques and feedback structures to sustain and complete the project, providing spaces and opportunities for all team members to contribute to this work.

Managing a Budget Reduction
In early 2024, Furman University was required to reduce their library materials budget by $150,000. This presentation seeks to explain how they did so thoughtfully and intentionally. Topics covered will focus on the project management aspects of the budget reduction including: creating a team, setting a scope, conducting the assessment, engaging stakeholders, and final recommendations.
