PCC Linked Data Tactical Planning Meeting--Summary and outcomes

    Dear Colleagues,

    Happy New Year!

I write today to share the summary and outcomes from the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC)'s recently hosted meeting on Linked Data Tactical Planning on November 6, 2024. At this meeting, members of the PCC Policy Committee were joined by colleagues from various stakeholder groups associated with linked data implementation, among them: the Library of Congress, OCLC, BIBFRAME Interoperability Group, PCC Linked Data Advisory Committee, PCC Identity Management Advisory Committee, PCC Consultation Group for Library Systems and Vendors, Share-VDE Advisory Council, Blue Core (LD4P), and the Wikimedia Partnerships Team. Representatives from library system vendors also participated in the meeting. A full attendees list is included as an appendix to the summary document.

During the morning session, attendees gained insights into the state of the industry through presentations by six organizations that are developing linked data tools and infrastructure. The presentation slides are linked from the summary document. The discussions held during the afternoon session synthesized this knowledge (as well as recent linked data-related group work in the PCC) and addressed several thematic areas:

    1. PCC Policies and Best Practices
    2. PCC Training and Outreach
    3. Tools and Infrastructure (to Support Linked Data Creation, Management, Sharing, Reuse, etc.)
    4. Interoperability (MARC-to-LD, LD-to-MARC, LD-to-LD), Reconciliation and System Performance
    5. User Experience (UX) for Linked Data Tools for GLAM Metadata Workers
    6. Change Management Support and Advocacy (for Library Workers and End Users)

Under each of these thematic headers are key takeaways and action items for the PCC and allied groups. The general timeframe for follow-up actions is the next two years, although some work will extend farther into the future.

The PCC is excited to offer programming (open to all!) during the first half of 2025 related to these linked data themes and outcomes. Such programming will occur:

    • During our next virtual Participants Meeting on February 13
    • During our At Large Virtual Conference in April
    • During the ALA Annual Conference in Philadelphia in June

Details about these events and their focus on linked data as a recurring theme will be shared soon. Stay tuned!

We invite feedback and questions about the summary and outcomes at any time. Please use our new general feedback and question form.

    Yours,

    Casey
