Opportunity to comment to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration about artificial intelligence and ethics issues

  • 1.  Opportunity to comment to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration about artificial intelligence and ethics issues

Apologies for belatedly posting about this.  This past year, I've periodically been checking the Federal Register, and there has been a drip drip of government action on regulating artificial intelligence within specific industries.

Right now, there's a much more general ask from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration about ethics and artificial intelligence generally.  That call is here https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2023/04/13/2023-07776/ai-accountability-policy-request-for-comment   .  What that is is a request for comment.  When a federal agency makes regulations, part of that process is accepting feedback from the general public with a request for comment.  Any one can submit comments by clicking the green button in the top right to "Submit a Formal Comment".

The summary of the request for comment is "The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) hereby requests comments on Artificial Intelligence ("AI") system accountability measures and policies. This request focuses on self-regulatory, regulatory, and other measures and policies that are designed to provide reliable evidence to external stakeholders-that is, to provide assurance-that AI systems are legal, effective, ethical, safe, and otherwise trustworthy. NTIA will rely on these comments, along with other public engagements on this topic, to draft and issue a report on AI accountability policy development, focusing especially on the AI assurance ecosystem."

The actual request has a series of open ended questions.  A response could answer the whole list, answer a question or a few questions, or give general feedback.  There isn't any required format.  Someone at the agency will read each comment, and there usually will be a follow up by the agency publishing a summary of comments recieved.

For anyone following artificial intelligence ethics, it's a chance to give feedback early in the process and possibly impact how artificial intelligence is regulated in the U.S.

Comments are due by June 12, 2023.
