The Head of the Cataloging and Metadata Management Section provides strategic leadership for cataloging and metadata management of biomedical literature and other resources acquired for the NLM collection. The Section creates and maintains bibliographic and authority records which are distributed and used by libraries world-wide.
The Head serves as a technical authority and spokesperson on NLM cataloging policy and metadata services and participates in national and international bibliographic control programs and standards development. The Head oversees the preparation of cataloging policy statements used by NLM staff; the development, maintenance, and publication of the NLM Classification ; metadata mapping services which provide data to important internal NLM products such as PubMed and Digital Collections ; and distribution of machine-readable records in MARC, XML, as linked data, and other standard community formats.
The Head serves on working groups within NLM and represents NLM to various professional organizations and government agencies. When fully staffed, the Section has 20 professional librarians, technical information specialists, and library technical support personnel.
