Hi everyone,
Thanks for a great conversation! Here is what we discussed-our main topic of conversation was around fundraising. We are taking a break for the Summer, and will resume our meetings in August!
- Folks provided updates regarding some success stories they recently had-funding around the development of a seed library and study pods, student employee scholarships, special collections funding, and a connection with an art collector who donated part of their collection as well as some funding to support student employment
- We discussed ways to collaborate with advancement offices which included providing tours and outlining priorities, ensuring that there is alignment with the library's mission and vision
- We clarified terms such as endowment which means that the funds are collecting interest and we use the interest rather than the fund itself vs a gift fund which once is expended is out of funds
- We talked about several types of events to connect with donors and students who would become future alumni which includes library tours, speakers/presentations, hearing from library employees and students
- Day of giving crowdfunding is also a popular approach for smaller donations
- Most libraries do not ask employees to contribute but offer the various giving opportunities as an option
- Communication is also a challenge-not sending out too many messages, ensuring messages are tailored for individuals, and receiving asks for future donations and how to coordinate with offices of advancement who may send out their own communication
- Finally, we discussed how to handle requests for events in the library-ensuring that they are connected with the library and having policies around dealing with logistics such as setup, food, etc.
