For more than ten years, Waldseemüller's 1507 World Map and the Abel Buell map were on exhibit at the Library of Congress. Such long-term exhibitions were made possible by using anoxic and hypoxic encasements. These two maps were taken off exhibit in 2022-2023 and probably provide the first examples of test data on the impact of long-term display in anoxia and hypoxia storage on paper-based materials. Speakers from the Library and the National Archives will describe the development of advanced encasements for their institutions and the monitoring of their internal environments during deployment. Additionally, the Library will present its research approach to assess before and after exhibition data of the maps, and discuss implications of the results for future preservation planning.
