Purpose: Provides a venue for directing questions and concerns towards current and retired directors for open discussion. Possible topics could include leadership, library school education, major issues facing directors, preparing for an administrative role, positives and negatives of directing a library, and the thought processes of directors in day-to-day operations. The goal is to provide a group where directors and the curious alike can equally gain from the back and forth discussions, and educate people in the roles and experiences of directors.

    Colleagues-

The Dialogue with Directors Interest Group is pleased to announce that our IG Week program will take place on Wednesday, March 8, 1:00 – 2:00 PM Central (2:00 – 3:00 PM Eastern). Our theme is "Think big, think external: How understanding your external environment can help your success as a director."

Are you a library director or considering this step? We hope you'll join us for a stimulating discussion. The session outline is below, and you can register at https://ala-events.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIudOGoqTgsHtSngZZCTl0rP-Qyv_qpE9af. This session will not be recorded.

Library directors and deans are expected to focus on the "big picture" like campus / local community issues or communication with stakeholders, and to ensure that the library has the funds, resources, and staffing to be an effective partner. Recent discussions in the Dialogue with Directors interest group have focused on internal readiness to fill those needs, whether this is succession planning, dealing with hiring challenges, or ensuring that operations can continue. During IG Week, we plan to start conversations about the external environment. What do you know? What do you need to know? If you're a new or wannabe director, what partnerships have you found beneficial, and what conversations have benefited the library and external stakeholders? If you are already a seasoned veteran, let us hear from you about how you're keeping your library relevant to your institution or community.

We encourage directors or those interested in library administration, at any type of library, to join us.

We look forward to seeing you!
