Purpose: Provides a forum for researching potential applications of Machine and Deep Learning in library science, including discussions, publications, and outreach to the wider Library community. Its goal is to educate librarians on uses of the complex techniques of machine learning and to provide a space for critically thinking both about new applications, and about the ethical and social impact of these technologies , as the field rapidly expands in the coming decade.

This group is part of Core's Technology Section.

    Greetings,

I volunteered to be chair for the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Libraries Interest Group, wanting to save this group. (Chair-less groups apparently get placed on a list for possible dissolution!) So much is happening in this field right now.

Thanks so much to Amanda for chairing this group last year. I've been reading the past discussion posts and am impressed at the expertise and knowledge in this group.

I consider myself a facilitator of this group as still very much in a learning phase regarding ML. I attended the IDEA Institute on Artificial Intelligence last summer and am trying to bridge the coding chasm by learning Python as well as taking Andrew Ng's Coursera Machine Learning course. I've worked in metadata departments throughout my career. A recurring professional interest has focused on how technological solutions can improve our services.

Incidentally, you can use this email to communicate with the list: ALA-CoreAIAndMachineLearningInLibraries@ConnectedCommunity.org

    Just introducing myself.

I'm Phil. I'm interested in using Artificial Intelligence. I'm hoping to understand AI a bit more within the context of libraries. I've been playing around with deep fakes/GANs and computer vision and I hope to have a project done by next year.

Are there any projects currently underway?

    Welcome Phil,

I'm currently working with extracting names from one of our digitized collections using name entity recognition and hope to have made significant headway by the end of the year.   But I also am interesting in exploring the potential of topic clustering. I've also been intrigued by Adromeda Yelton's Hamlet project that compares documents.
