Interest Group Cataloging & Classification Research

We have two great presentations for Interest Group Week, March 5, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (EST)

First up we have Amy Phillips presentation based on a co-authored article with Nancy Cooey "Library of Congress Subject Headings: A Post-Coordinated Future" published in Cataloging and Classification Quarterly. The article, a revision of a report submitted to Library of Congress leadership, analyzes the value of pre- and post-coordinated subject headings. Previous analyses done by LC policy specialists favored a pre-coordinated approach. Cooey and Phillips reached a different conclusion. After a presentation of the key arguments made in the paper, Phillips will invite attendees to discuss their take aways and insights about pre- and post-coordinated subject headings.

Publishing scholarly articles effects all of us and we can learn some key insights from this next presentation by Linda Miles and Robin Brown based on their article "Community College Librarians' Research and Publication Practices" published in College and Research Libraries. Community college librarians do not disseminate enough research to enable their colleagues and their libraries to reach their potential. Little is known about what types of supportive measures might increase productivity. The authors collected quantitative and qualitative survey data, finding that a slight majority of participants conduct research, but less than one third of those who research share their findings. Key challenges include lack of time, lack of funding, and lack of confidence.
