Members of the Core Catalog Form and Function Interest Group, hello!

My name is Adrienne Sanders. I volunteered last minute to chair this group, so I am still catching up on my duties, but wanted to introduce myself and see if we can begin an informal discussion.

A bit about me and my interest in this group: I'm currently Rare Materials Cataloging Librarian at the University of Kansas Libraries and have been in this position for six weeks. Previously I was Cataloging and Metadata Librarian at Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library. I became interested in catalog form and function over the past few years when the library wanted to move away from the discovery layer they are using and to something else. In the process trying to figure out what "something else" might be, we did a lot of testing various catalog functions and comparing the public facing results to the actual holdings in the staff client. It made me very aware of the differences between how we catalog (mostly in MARC) and how catalogs interpret searches, retrieve results, and display them to users.

I'd like to hear from you- why did you join this group? What do you think of when you hear the phrase "catalog form and function"? Feel free to introduce yourself and say a few words about what you'd like to discuss.

Also, please be thinking about what you might like to see this group do for Core Interest Group Week or for other activities throughout the year. We do not have to do a formal activity, but if you have ideas for a presentation, forum, discussion, or something else,  I'd love to hear them. (The form for Interest Group Deliverables was due October 6, before I knew I would be chairing, but it is not actually too late to commit to something.)

    Thank you!
    Adrienne
