  • 1.  Fwd: MAC papers and agenda for 2025 Midwinter meeting available online

    Posted Jan 02, 2025 02:03 PM
    Dear CC:DA colleagues,

Appended is the notice from the MARC Advisory Committee (MAC) regarding the papers to be considered at the next MAC meeting. Please provide any feedback by 5 pm EST on January 17 (Friday), so that I can submit a response by the committee's deadline.

A synopsis, to whet your appetites for deeper dives into the papers (see my notations underlined, and my particular requests further bolded):
    • Proposal No. 2025-01: Adding Subfields $i and $4 to Fields 368, 376, and 381 in the MARC 21 Authority and Bibliographic Formats -- drawing from a previous Discussion paper, a somewhat pro forma addition of rapidly becoming standard options to convey relationship data.

    • Proposal No. 2025-02: Redefining Subfield $b in X00 Fields in the MARC 21 Authority and Bibliographic Formats -- drawing from a previous Discussion paper, modifies the definition of X00 $b to expand beyond the current Western focus of what are more colloquially considered regnal numbers.

    • Discussion Paper No. 2025-DP01: Defining a New Subfield for Context of Transcribed Title Statement in Field 245 of the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format -- an exploration of a new 245 $z to provide a means of recording contextual information for titles, particularly those with "harmful language" (as articulated in the paper); this paper takes up, with a new solution, the topic previously explored in Discussion Paper 2024-DP02. The prior paper engendered extensive discussion and a variety of perspectives on this paper would be welcome.

    • Discussion Paper No. 2025-DP02: Adding a Code for Remote Sensing Image to Fields 008/25 and 006/08 (Maps) in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format -- an exploration of expanding 008/006 coding to include "remote sensing image" as an option. I will show my hand that it seems the 007 field already supports identification of "remote sensing image" as a specific material designation in the 007/01 position. Guidance and perspectives on whether addressing this in the 008/006 would serve a sufficiently unique purpose or if it is unnecessarily duplicative would be welcome.

    • Discussion Paper No. 2025-DP03: Defining Field 655 (Index Term-Genre/Form) in the MARC 21 Holdings Format -- an exploration of adding field 655 to the Holdings format to address Genre/Form terms applicable to specific items of a manifestation (nominally, Genre/Form considerations are outside the scope of CC:DA but I welcome perspectives to provide contributions to MAC as general practitioners).

    • Discussion Paper No. 2025-DP04: Redefining Subfield $7 to Accommodate its Use with Subfield $g in Fields 856 and 857 of the MARC 21 Formats -- an exploration of modifying the definition of 856 $7 and 857 $7 to address the prior addition of $g to those fields; $g being a subfield to which the $7 (Access status) could apply.

    Regards,
    John

    Proposal 2025-01

I have similar concerns as in the CCM response, posted on the MARC list on 1/17/25. In addition to their concerns, I also observe that authority records, in particular, should not be trying to substitute for other reference works. The basic purpose of MARC authority records remains establishing the authorized character string and the justification for it. I find the additional information added to be the most helpful when it disambiguates entities that might otherwise be confused (or provides information that might be used for future disambiguation), or if it provides information that I would otherwise have to look up and confirm. (This is especially true for music name/title records in my experience.) I would prefer to have this proposal rejected.

    Proposal 2025-02

    Makes sense to me.

    Discussion Paper 2025-DP01

Like CCM, I support this discussion paper, and agree that best practices/guidelines from cataloging communities will be essential if this content designation is implemented in MARC. I also agree that $z needs to always be at the end of the 245.

    Discussion Paper 2025-DP02

The paper makes a compelling point about the need for this refinement. Using "other" should always be a last resort, because it really provides no context. (Other than what, exactly?). I support this moving to the proposal phase.

    Discussion Paper 2025-DP03

Do "copy-specific" characteristics belong in the HOL format? (I realize that there is no MARC item format, but I don't see how this paper solves the problem if the library has two different bespoke bindings or two different annotated copies for the same "resource".

    Discussion Paper 2025-DP04

The need for this change seems clear to me.
