This is the kind of question for which I really should have a go-to answer, but it sent me to my bookshelf to consider which materials have shaped my thinking about (and, I hope, practice of) communication.
I've definitely come to appreciate the role of relationships and emotions in communication, so I have to recommend the section called "Communication: Listening Openly and Sending Convincing Messages" from Daniel Goleman's
Working with Emotional Intelligence (pp. 174-77 in the 1998 Bantam Books paperback edition). I was also reviewing notes from
Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High (Patterson, Grenny, McMillan, et al.) that recalled ideas like the "pool of shared meaning" that have helped me manage difficult professional communication situations.
Your question also brought me back to a book I found fascinating, Erin Meyer's
The Culture Map: Breaking Through the Invisible Boundaries of Global Business, which provides many examples of the role cultural norms can play in (mis)communication. An enjoyable read that challenged my assumptions!
