    Hello everyone,

In keeping with this month's discussion theme, please share a favorite book or article that has helped or influenced your communication style or approach! To start, I will share the following article on team communication: https://www.csu.edu.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0008/917018/Eight-Behaviors-for-Smarter-Teams-2.pdf.

This is the kind of question for which I really should have a go-to answer, but it sent me to my bookshelf to consider which materials have shaped my thinking about (and, I hope, practice of) communication.

I've definitely come to appreciate the role of relationships and emotions in communication, so I have to recommend the section called "Communication: Listening Openly and Sending Convincing Messages" from Daniel Goleman's Working with Emotional Intelligence (pp. 174-77 in the 1998 Bantam Books paperback edition). I was also reviewing notes from Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High (Patterson, Grenny, McMillan, et al.) that recalled ideas like the "pool of shared meaning" that have helped me manage difficult professional communication situations.

Your question also brought me back to a book I found fascinating, Erin Meyer's The Culture Map: Breaking Through the Invisible Boundaries of Global Business, which provides many examples of the role cultural norms can play in (mis)communication. An enjoyable read that challenged my assumptions!

A favorite communication book that I recommend to many people is Fierce Conversations by Susan Scott.  I appreciate the structure it provides for both formal and informal conversations about difficult situations and challenges that need to be discussed.  It invites you to be your authentic and honest self in the conversation.

Two titles I've found immensely useful in helping shape my communication style are The Coaching Habit and The Advice Trap, both by Michael Bungay Stanier. Advice Trap was assigned as part of our peer coaching curriculum and offered an approach to team communication that I hadn't seen communicated as clearly elsewhere. I particularly appreciate how both books focus on helping me guide people through their own problem solving processes rather than trying to "fix" things for them.

These sound really useful, Genifer. I find it challenging to stay in a "coaching" mindset instead of jumping right to problem-solving and advice-giving. It's hard not to feel like I should have all the answers. Thanks for the recommendations!
