Core Webinar: The Search For Meaningful Work: Overcoming Low Morale, Quiet Quitting, & Dead End Jobs

    Date: Tuesday, October 24, 2023

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.

Description: This presentation centers on creating a meaningful work life while also exploring how to break free from unfavorable elements. Low morale, quiet quitting, and dead end jobs refer to the subtle and gradual disengagement of library workers from their professional roles, often due to little opportunity for promotion or advancement, inadequate support, a lack of pay increases, repetitive tasks, low autonomy, and a negative work culture. There will be a discussion on actionable steps that individuals and managers can take to create a more inclusive career development environment. This talk will be based on the presenter's ALA article: https://americanlibrariesmagazine.org/2023/06/01/dont-ignore-quiet-quitting/  and https://acrlog.org/2023/05/23/when-librarianship-becomes-a-dead-end-job/

    Learning outcomes:

By the end of this webinar, the attendees will be able to:

    • Understand the concept of creating a meaningful work life and its significance in professional well-being.

    • Explore the various challenges and dissatisfaction that can contribute to the gradual disengagement of library workers from their roles including burnout, lack of professional growth opportunities, inadequate support, and evolving technological demands.

    • Identify steps to foster a positive work culture, empower employees, and enhance job satisfaction, ultimately contributing to a more enriching and fulfilling professional experience.

    Who should attend?

This talk is designed for both library staff and managers who want to create an environment where people can learn, earn, and feel a sense of belonging

    Presenter:

Alejandro Marquez (he/him) is a Collection Development Librarian at Auraria Library which provides academic resources for the University of Colorado Denver, the Metropolitan State University of Denver, and the Community College of Denver. He also served in the Peace Corps in El Salvador where he worked as a Municipal Development volunteer. His research interests include open scholarship and underserved communities.
