All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.

Description: Accessibility metadata are machine and human readable descriptions of the accessibility characteristics of a resource.

This session will introduce accessibility metadata; explaining what it is, where it’s found and why it’s important. We will then focus on how to include accessibility metadata in library catalog records; discussing specific MARC fields and options for their use in discovery layers to make accessible resources more easily findable.

    Learning outcomes:

At the end of this webinar, the attendees will be able to:

    • Understand what accessibility metadata is and why it's important.
    • Learn about specific MARC fields and how to incorporate them into your catalog records to make accessible resources more discoverable.
    • Learn search strategies for finding accessible resources in the library catalog.

    Who should attend?

Catalogers will receive guidance on adding accessibility metadata; reference librarian/teachers on importance of accessibility metadata for search strategies and sharing user information needs with catalogers for enhancement of records.

    Presenters:

Teressa Keenan is professor and Head of Collections and Metadata Services at the University of Montana, Mansfield Library. She catalogs monographic resources, maps and media and serves as an accessibility contact for students and faculty. She is a graduate of the University of Washington (MLIS), and Wittenberg University (BA, Biology and Philosophy).
