____________
Engage in the present while planning for the future
For the past 2 years, DPI (Digital Programs and Initiatives) at the University of Maryland Libraries completed 5 major projects. DPI manages two digital library applications: one for image/text collections and another for audiovisual collections. Two librarians, collaborating closely with SSDR (Software Systems Development and Research) formed a Digital Collections Scrum unit, working under Agile principles. With one librarian serving as the product manager for both applications, the team was able to stagger projects rather than handling them sequentially. This approach allowed for overlap testing of current developments and requirements gathering for future work, saving time and enhancing product quality. The product manager's involvement in agile testing at the end of each sprint cycle facilitated faster feedback. Additional benefits included having user documentation ready at the end of development and improved communication through the use of a Trello board for recording requirements and sharing project progress.
