    Description

Libraries are continually expanding their digital libraries to include more research materials, such as digitized manuscripts, books, photographs, audiovisual materials, born digital files, etc. As these digital assets grow in number, libraries often must adapt processes and staff roles to better manage, preserve, describe, and provide access to these materials. Born digital material types and changing technologies complicate library efforts to provide access to digital library materials. Incomplete or incorrect metadata limits collection discoverability. Without proper planning and execution, other issues may arise including uneven preservation practices across collections and a lack of organizational coordination for digital preservation. This e-Forum will discuss overall digital curation ideals, useful systems and tools, pain points, and successes.

    Hosts

Lindsey Memory is BYU Library's Digital Initiatives Department Head. She oversees the library's digital asset management platform, digitization lab, institutional repository, and the digital preservation program.

Nicole Lewis is BYU Library's Digital Metadata Librarian. She is responsible for digital object metadata across multiple library repositories and for their catalog records in the ILS.

Rebecca Wiederhold is BYU Library's Technical Services Archivist. She reviews finding aids for standards compliance and catalogs archival and manuscripts collections. She also heads the Library's Archival Processing Section, which prepares file- and item-level descriptions for unpublished materials in preparation for digitization projects

    What Is an e-Forum?

A Core e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters of interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list. The e-forum discussion list works like an email listserv: register your email address with the list, and then you will receive messages and communicate with other participants through an email discussion. Most e-forums last two to three days. Registration is necessary to participate, but it's free.

    How to Register

You must register your email address to subscribe to or access an electronic discussion list on ALA's Mailing List Service. Once you have registered for one e-forum, you do not need to register again, unless you choose to leave the list. Find instructions for subscribing and unsubscribing online.
