Can We Talk?: turning pain points into positive possibilities

Hello and welcome to the ALA Core Creative Ideas in Technical Services Interest Group!  As you can see from Core Connect, our IG is 294 members strong.  Just think about what we can learn from one another!

My name is Laura Sill from the University of Chicago and I am the Chair of CITSIG this year.  I am joined by Kelli Getz from the University of Notre Dame as my vice-chair.

I've been reading about the process of turning pain points into innovative solutions, and Kelli and I thought it would be fun to start an asynchronous discussion here on the platform to surface your pain points and to leverage the collective wisdom of our group to think through the issues and to share possible solutions.

What are your technical services pain points?
What are your technical services needs?
What are the needs of your patrons that you or your institution struggle to address?

We hope you'll join us in the conversation!

    How will this work?

    • First, please review the ALA Code of Conducthttps://connect.ala.org/core/codeofconduct
    • Please be respectful to our colleagues and institutions as we surface pain points; our goal is to find solutions and to support one another!
    • To get started, reply to this message!
    • If a topic takes hold, Kelli or I may separate the topic into its own discussion thread.

Why now?  We're all so busy!

    • We all need support, and pain points are relatively easy things to share (or at least, we think this may be!)
    • We're also starting to plan for the upcoming Virtual IG Week, and we'd like to focus presentations that week on issues most on your minds.  We thought a discussion here might help us identify some good topics for follow up in addition to the traditional call for participation.
    • We know the holidays are upon us!  We're ok with minimal conversation now; we'll keep the conversation going over the coming weeks and into the new year!

    Thanks for participating!

Many libraries are facing flat or reduced collections budgets. What are some of the unique ways that you've found to save money that you would recommend to others in similar situations? Which tools do you use to help you make collections decisions?

It would be great to be able to collect some information about the tools we are all using to make collection decisions.  As I think about this topic, the use case I keep thinking about is DEI or collection diversification, and tools used to help define or refine decision-making around this topic.
