The ALA Core MARC Formats Transition Interest Group is now seeking facilitators for roundtable discussions for its session on June 30, Sunday, from 2:30 to 3:30pm at the 2024 ALA Annual Conference.

Housed within the Core division of ALA, the MARC Formats Transition Interest Group provides a forum to educate the library community about ongoing efforts to transition from the MARC Standard for bibliographic data and examines new approaches and strategies for implementing bibliographic data models within the framework of linked open data and semantic web technology.

The theme for the roundtable discussion session is "Exploring the Shift of MARC within the Context of Linked Data (LD) Environment."

Topics to be discussed include, but are not limited to
    • Case Studies of Institutions Implementing Linked Data in Cataloging
    • Interoperability and Integration of MARC and Linked Data Systems
    • Tools, Techniques and Guidelines for Converting MARC Records to Linked Data
    • Impact of Linked Data on Library Cataloging Practices Compared to MARC Cataloging
    • Metadata Quality and Enrichment in the Linked Data Environment Compared to MARC Cataloging
    • User Experience and Discovery Enhancements with Linked Data Catalogs compared to MARC-based Catalogs
    • Future Trends and Directions in MARC to Linked Data Transition

Roundtable discussions offer small, informal group discussions aimed at providing participants with the opportunity to network, discuss best practices, and share information. Discussion facilitators are responsible for identifying and developing a topic, creating discussion questions, and facilitating a discussion.  Discussion facilitators will also provide a quick report back to the group at large toward the end of the session. If similar proposals are submitted and accepted, facilitators may be asked to co-facilitate.

Those interested in participating as a discussion facilitator should submit a proposal that includes:
    • The topic you wish to explore related to MARC in the context of LD environment.
    • An abstract or a description that explains the topic.
    • Three sample discussion questions.

Please send your proposal to the Co-chairs by May 20, 2023.
