The Faceted Subject Access Interest Group (FSAIG) within the American Library Association's Core Division is seeking a Co-Chair for July 1, 2026 - June 30, 2028.
There are two FSAIG Co-Chairs and they have staggered terms. Co-Chairs are volunteers and they are expected to lead at least two activities each year. These activities are related to the group's charge, which is:
-
To discuss the theory and applications related to subject terminology intended for faceted application, including FAST (Faceted Application of Subject Terminology), AAT (Art and Architecture Thesaurus), LCGFT (Library of Congress genre/form terms), LCDGT (Library of Congress Demographic Group Terms), and others.
-
To serve as a forum for users and others interested in the faceted approach to subject access, to compare notes and discuss further developments and implementation of subject faceting for digital projects and related topics.
As a Co-Chair, you might choose to engage in some of these activities:
-
Organize a one-hour online session at ALA Core Interest Group Week
-
Lead occasional live, online discussions for other FSAIG members
-
Post occasional discussion questions on the FSAIG ALA Connect page
-
OPTIONALLY: Organize an in-person session at the ALA Annual Conference (The recent co-chairs have not done this, but you can choose to do this)
-
Any other activity that interests you
The only Co-Chair requirement: You must be a member of the American Library Association Core Division.
You may enjoy being a Co-Chair if:
-
You are interested in discussing subject terms, subject faceting, and controlled vocabularies
-
You are interested in meeting other library and metadata workers throughout North America (and maybe beyond North America)
-
You are interested in gaining leadership experience and skills in the American Library Association
To apply: Email a statement of interest to the current FSAIG Co-Chairs, Andrea Schuba (aschuba@umd.edu) and Lori Dekydtspotter (lodekydt@iu.edu), by the end of your work day on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.
This statement of interest should be around 75 - 150 words. It can include information such as
-
why you are interested in being an FSAIG Co-Chair
-
your current job, or, library fields that you're interested in working in
-
any relevant experience (for example: using faceted vocabularies or controlled vocabularies, participating in faceted subject projects, facilitating online or in-person discussions, etc.)
These are just suggested topics to include in your statement of interest. You do not need to cover all of these topics and you can write about a different topic if you feel that it is relevant.

We look forward to hearing from you!
