Best of Core Forum: White Supremacy in the Stacks

    Date: Tuesday, May 7, 2024

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.

Description: Library classifications exist, in theory, to group books on similar topics together. However, the way in which librarians choose to group books together serves to highlight biases, sometimes conscious and sometimes unconscious. This session examines how Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal Classifications handle books on topics relevant to White Supremacy and how this perpetuates the idea of a color-blind or color-neutral society.

    Learning outcomes:

By the end of this webinar, the attendees will:

    • Identify problematic classifications in collections

    • Be more intentional about reparative classification

    • Provide recommendations for how to ameliorate these issues

    Who should attend?

Anyone involved in cataloging and classification, as well as administrators who might be future decision makers with regards to implementing new systems.

    Presenter:

Preston Salisbury is the Collection Maintenance Librarian at Mississippi State University.
