Announcement on updates to terms describing prejudicial works in the RBMS Controlled Vocabulary for Rare Materials Cataloging

  • 1.  Announcement on updates to terms describing prejudicial works in the RBMS Controlled Vocabulary for Rare Materials Cataloging

    Posted 13 days ago

The RBMS Controlled Vocabularies Editorial Group would like to announce an update to the RBMS Controlled Vocabulary for Rare Materials Cataloging (RBMS CVRMC) and RBMS Relationship Designators. All terms previously under review as part of the Prejudicial Materials Working Group's work are now available for use. RBMS CVRMC is a thesaurus of genre and form terms that are specific to the needs of the rare materials community. However, these new and revised terms, used for indexing works that are prejudicial in nature or related to systems of oppression, also have wider applicability beyond rare materials.

The Prejudicial Materials Working Group began in 2020 with the goal of revising and expanding terms in the RBMS Controlled Vocabularies addressing prejudicial works. The work included an initial review that yielded new terms and scope notes, a public review period, and the incorporation of feedback from multiple groups.

All terms and their scope notes are searchable on id.loc.gov. If you have visited the vocabulary prior to this update, you will likely need to clear your browser cache or manually refresh pages for the newest updates to show. The vocabulary landing pages also contain a link to a form for proposals for new terms or revisions to existing terms. We welcome new term proposals from all thesaurus users. We have no intention of declaring this part of the vocabulary a "finished product" as we fully believe it will not be static. Our expectation is growth and change with time and user feedback.

Many thanks are due to the people who contributed their time, energy, and expertise to this multi-year project. We gratefully acknowledge the following people who have been or are currently members of the Working Group (in alphabetical order): Liz Adams, Erin Blake, Jennifer Bradshaw, Jeremy Brett, Brenna Bychowski, Alison Clemens, Maren Cornett, Jessica Grzegorski, Jose Guerrero, Ryan Hildebrand, Sarah Hoover, Francis Lapka, Francesca Marini, Kathleen Siebert Medicus, Lauren Reno, and Staci Ross.

To learn more, please join members of CVEG and the Working Group for a one-hour webinar hosted by the RBMS Bibliographic Standards Committee on April 22 at 2 pm ET / 1 pm CT / 12 pm MT / 11 am PT.
