    Core webinar: Building Capacity for Community-led Planning

    Date: Tuesday, November 16, 2021

    All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.

    Description: To live out our core values of equity, diversity, and inclusion, libraries are seeking out ways to be more community-centered. Community-led planning is a method that can be used to create public programs and services that celebrate the strengths and interests of diverse communities. But it is also a big cultural shift for many libraries. In this webinar, library leaders will learn about an evidence-based process to build their library’s capacity to make this change.

    Learning outcomes:

    By the end of the webinar, attendees will:

    • be able to define community-led planning, and understand how it differs from community engagement, outreach, or promotion;
    • understand the twelve factors that influence libraries’ and librarians’ capacity for community-led work; and
    • be able to apply the three-phase Community-Led Capacity Building model to their own libraries.

    Who should attend?

    Dr. Barbakoff’s research focuses on public libraries and public programs, but the lessons are applicable to libraries and services of many types because they focus on how to center the voice of underserved library users.

    Presenter:

    Dr. Barbakoff is the Community Engagement and Economic Development Manager at King County Library System. She leads a team of managers and coordinators who support adults throughout the county with information services, readers’ services, older adult services, Mobile services, and a wide variety programs. She strives to center community and equity in everything she does. Dr. Barbakoff is a Library Journal Mover & Shaker and the author of Adults Just Wanna Have Fun: Programs for Emerging Adults (ALA Editions, 2016). Her ALA service includes terms as a past LLAMA board member, IFRT chair, co-chair of the Emerging Leaders program, and Councilor-at-Large. She holds an MLIS from the University of Washington and an Ed.D. in Organizational Change and Leadership from the University of Southern California.
