  • 1.  A Change in Participation Policy : Ebooks Friday at ALA Annual

    Posted May 03, 2022 09:48 AM

    Hi all,

We plan to revive "Ebooks Friday" at ALA Annual this year (see below for schedule) but a complication has arisen.  A number of you were planning on attending virtually, in some cases because your organizations are still not allowing/paying for travel.

I had a Zoom meeting set up for the day.

A complication has arisen. I have received this email about a policy decision from the ALA Board:

    "Dear Committee Leaders,

We are looking forward to the upcoming ALA Annual Conference, June 23-28 in Washington D.C. The conference is shaping up to offer a remarkable array of interactive educational and professional development sessions, inspiring speakers, and exhibitors, along with many opportunities to interact with much missed colleagues.

Thank you all for taking care to participate in virtual committee meetings during these unprecedented times when we were not able to meet in person. Now, as we prepare for ALA's first in-person Annual Conference and Council Meetings in over two years, we will honor ALA Policy (A.7.4.5) regarding registration and ALA Conference meetings. Per that policy, registration at Annual Conference is required of those attending all other meetings of the Association, its units, and committees. Members who plan to attend in person will need to register for Annual Conference, while virtual participants should register for the Digital Experience. The Digital Experience will mirror a selection of in person offerings and some exclusive experiences. As member leaders, this is an important opportunity for us to connect and engage together again as a body.

So,  how many of you are planning on attending in-person or via the "Digital Experience"?

If most of you, we will proceed as scheduled.

If lots of you were planning on attending the free and open Zoom, however, and registration is difficult (costs $250) for you, then we may need to think about alternatives.

If you this change presents difficulties for you, please email me off-list at mblackwell@stmalib.org to let me know.

Subject: Ebooks Friday at ALA Annual Taking Shape

    Hi all,

June 24th is (once again!) "Ebooks Friday" at ALA Annual.

For those of you not able to attend in person, I'm working on a Zoom virtual option.

9:30 - 10:30:  Ebooks Interest Group (Everyone welcome-publishers, vendors, librarians of course-for a wide-ranging discussion of trends and concerns in the library digital content.)

10:45 - 11:45:  Consortial Ebooks Interest Meeting (By popular demand, a forum for discussion of issues specifically related to use of digital content in consortiums)

1:00 – 2:00:  Palace (The latest news about the Palace library digital content app, perhaps demos of functionality)

2:15 – 3:15:  SimplyE (The latest news about the SimplyE library digital content app, perhaps demos of functionality)

3:30 – 4:30: Library Futures (If you are not familiar with Library Futures, this will be an interesting session-updates and discussion of controlled digital lending, state ebook laws,  and a review of 1st year accomplishments.

Room # at ALA Annual to be determined.

    Thanks!

    Michael

    Michael, et. al.,

I will probably be able to register for the Digital Experience option, subject to approval and funding by my employer.

Thank you for providing the heads up about this, Michael.

    Regards,

    Will
