Nancy Lorimer (Stanford University and Chair of MLA’s Genre/Form Task Force) discussed the February 2015 release of 600 genre/form terms for musical works, a collaboration between the Library of Congress and the Music Library Association. This is part of the larger project to expand the Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms for Library and Archival Materials (LCGFT) to new domains, She reviewed the music vocabulary, its origins, the decision-making processes during its development, the interaction of LCGFT terms with those of the Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus for Music (LCMPT), and explained areas of the vocabulary that are still being developed or are otherwise in flux. She provided several examples on its use of LCGFT music terms and provide an introduction to Provisional Best Practices for Using LCGFT for Music Resources,a document created by the Music Library Association Vocabularies Subcommittee and Genre/Form Task Force to provide temporary guidelines until official documentation is completed.
