    Core webinar: Improving Web Site Accessibility


    Date: Tuesday, February 8, 2022

    All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.

     

    Description: This webinar will discuss a project to assess the accessibility of St. John’s University Library’s website using software called Siteimprove and suggest various means by which libraries can identify and fix accessibility problems within their websites.


    Learning outcomes: 

    By the end of this webinar, participants will gain an understanding of:

    • why web accessibility is important;
    • some common accessibility problems with library websites;
    • methods for identifying and fixing accessibility problems on library websites;
    • how St. John’s University Libraries used Siteimprove to increase web accessibility; and
    • some of the other services, such as WAVE (a free evaluation tool), which can be used to identify web accessibility problems.

    Who should attend?  

    Webmasters or others who create or maintain web content for libraries, and others who have an interest in web accessibility and usability.


    Presenters:

    Lois Cherepon, Director, Staten Island Campus Library, and Associate Professor, holds an MA in English Literature and Community College Teaching from the State University of New York at Binghamton, an MLS from Rutgers University, and a BA in English Literature and Secondary Education from Rutgers College. Lois has been a librarian for the past 35 years, including in reference, law, and government documents, and teaches computer applications and English composition. Research interests include legal research, Catholic higher education for women, English literature, and equity and access.

    Ben Turner is Program Coordinator of Library Assessment and Inclusive Practices and Associate Professor, St. John’s University. Ben holds an MA from Hunter College, CUNY, an MLIS from The University of British Columbia, and a BA (Hons.) from Concordia University. His research interests include library assessment, library instruction, and equity and inclusion in the library.
