Core webinar: Cognitive Load and Library Instructional Design

    Date: Tuesday, May 3, 2022

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.

Description: Learn how to help your students learn more efficiently by reducing the cognitive load -- the amount of mental effort -- taken up by extraneous information and poor design.

In this webinar, an experienced library instructor will demonstrate easy, non-technical best practices in instructional design that will help your information literacy teaching in any medium.

    Learning outcomes:

At the end of the webinar, attendees will be able to:

    1. Define extraneous and intrinsic cognitive load, and how they each affect information literacy learning; and
    2. Use simple best practices of instructional design to create better learning experiences and reduce extraneous cognitive load on students.

    Who should attend?

Academic instruction librarians will find it most useful, but any teaching librarians will be able to use the content and ideas.

    Presenter:

Jason Puckett is Online Learning Librarian and Associate Professor at Georgia State University Library in Atlanta, Georgia. Puckett has an MLIS from Florida State University and is the author of the ACRL books Modern Pathfinders: Creating Better Research Guides and Zotero: A Guide for Librarians, Researchers & Educators.
