Dear ACRL Budget & Finance Committee,

The Committee is invited to review the attached packet regarding ACRL's FY23 student dues rate recommendation to the ACRL Board of Directors and have discussion during the period of 10/17/2022–10/23/2022. If approved by the Committee, the Board will next hold an asynchronous virtual discussion and vote on a recommendation.

Committee members should post comments and questions regarding the action request using threaded discussion in ALA Connect to provide feedback. Comments received will be forwarded to ACRL Associate Director Mary Jane Petrowski, who will work with Jay on a response if needed.

Following the discussion period, the Committee will vote on the action request, through a virtual vote held 10/24/2022–10/30/2022, and confirm its vote at the next synchronous meeting.

    Best,

    Allison

    Allison,

I have a couple of questions.
    1.  What is the  current ALA student membership number?  The report had the number of student members for ACRL and the other divisions, but I didn't see the total for ALA student memberships.
    2.  Since membership has benefits, I was reviewing the benefits with discounts.  While I understand and appreciate  the membership dues to be a loss leader, the report doesn't note the additional discounts for the conferences, online learning and publications and if those services have an increase from the student membership.

    Thanks
    Susan

    Colleagues:
Is there any evidence that reduced student membership fees encourage students to engage and persist in membership after they graduate?

Thank you, Susan and Tracy, for your questions. ACRL Executive Director Jay Malone is in this ALA Connect Community, and will be in touch soon with follow-up.

The discussion period has been extended. After your questions are answered, I will post the asynchronous virtual vote to this ALA Connect Community.

    Best,
    Allison

Hello Susan and Tracie and apologies for the delay. Susan, your first question is easy to answer.  As of July 2022 (latest figures available):  ALA had 6,793 student members. Your second question is more of a challenge. It would be difficult to link student retention to other benefits, such as conference discounts: it would be nice to draw some correlations but the number of variables makes that hard. But I think you're asking if we are seeing more students taking advantage of these benefits and that would require research across multiple units, and I'm afraid that we don't have capacity to investigate it at this time.

Tracie, for your question about retention, the retention rate for student members was on the upswing prior to the COVID pandemic in 2020. We do not yet have 2022 membership data for June-August, which is needed to check renewals, so it remains to be seen if the student renewal rate is rebounding. Although the overall retention rate for first-time ACRL members has decreased 8.8% since 2021, declining from 53.5% to 44.7%, student membership renewals have declined only 5.9% over the same period, which is suggestive. We do plan to prepare a full analysis of student retention during the 2018-2022 period when the August 2022 membership statistics are reported

    Hope this helps.

    Jay
