Reported by Marina Morgan, ACRL Technical Services Interest Group (TSIG) Convener.
The ACRL Technical Services Interest Group held its ALA Annual Virtual meeting on Friday, June 24, 2021, at 2:15 PM CT, with 131 in attendance. The meeting consisted of three presentations as follows:
1. A tale of two catalogs: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times - How two integrated library systems Serve one campus / Jill Kehoe, Library Director, SUNY Maritime College Library
This presentation outlined a three-phase project to integrate the Ship's collection into Alma/Primo, officially making it a branch library that patrons can request material to be paged from and picked up on shore.
- Phase 1: setting up the library and collections in Alma, importing the brief records, and configuring terms of use.
- Phase 2: Identify match points to merge the ship records with more complete records that may already exist as part of the Stephen B. Luce Collection, or within the Network Zone.
- Phase 3: A complete inventory of the ship's collection, which will coincide with the collection moving to the new training ship, the Empire State VII in 2023.
2. The evolution of physical to digital archives: A systematic approach towards the Goldey-Beacom College image digitization process / Russell Michalak, Director of Library & Learning Center & Archives and Briana Daly, Library, Training, & Analytics Specialist, Goldey-Beacom College
This presentation focused on the transition of Goldey-Beacom Colleges archives from Gale Primary Sources to Adam Matthew's Quartex platform completed by the Hirons Library and Learning Center (HLLC) staff. During this transition, the HLLC staff learned about the software that worked well for converting archives, what practices worked and what did not work for the HLLC. With the help of Quartex support, the HLLC was able to upload over 30,000 historical archive images and documents that can be searchable, viewed, and downloaded by the college community.
3. Overwhelm: Deciding to do less with less / Susan Kromrie, Acquisition, Collection Development Librarian, Southwest Baptist University
This presentation focused on "Doing More with Less". Budgets shrink and people aren't replaced, and library staff have struggled to do all that we can to serve our students and other stakeholders. But what happens when we reach the point where we really cannot do more with less and instead have to do less with less? At Southwest Baptist University, a private, liberal arts university, in addition to the pandemic troubles, they had a large budget cut, lost one-third of the library staff, and greatly reduced the size of a branch campus library. The technical services was especially hard hit as they lost two of four positions. They could no longer do more with less.
We thank Jill Kehoe - Library Director, SUNY Maritime College Library, Russell Michalak - Director of Library & Learning Center & Archives, Briana Daly - Library, Training, & Analytics Specialist, Goldey-Beacom College, and Susan Kromrie - Acquisition, Collection Development Librarian, Southwest Baptist University for their presentations, and to all participants for attending our session at ALA Annual Virtual.
