Online Doc Giving Tuesday - November 28th - Please give to IFRT Awards - Your Gift will be matched

by Charles Kratz on Sun, Nov 26, 2017 at 02:57 pm

Dear IFRT Members

I have exciting news to share! An anonymous donor is matching gifts made to the ALA Annual Fund as of November 1, through the 2017 Annual Fund campaign. Donations are tax-deductible, and gifts from an individual donor, up to $1,000, are eligible. The match is capped at $10,000 total per ALA unit, and $100,000 overall. #GivingTuesday (November 28) is a social media driven day of giving held in conjunction with the beginning of the holiday season and end-of-year giving.

This day of giving dovetails nicely with IFRT's current fundraising campaign, which is raising funds for its awards program. As you know, our awards recognize notable contributions to intellectual freedom; demonstrations of personal courage and organizational work in defense of freedom of expression; and outstanding published works in the area of intellectual freedom. The IFRT awards include the Hodges Award, the Immroth Award and the Oboler Award.

Each year, our organization fights to protect our freedoms. Together we can support IFRT’s awards program and continue to recognize trailblazers in intellectual freedom.

Please visit ala.org/donate if you wish to make a donation, or explore our IFRT awards below.   Please click on roundtables and then click on IFRT.  Your donation will be formally recognized in the IFRT Annual Report.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Best wishes,

by Michael Furlong on Thu, Nov 16, 2017 at 09:35 am

Dear ALA members!

Take one minute. Just one. And think of an intellectual freedom story that has resonated with you. Just one.

Got it? (If you need help, browse through the IF News posts)

Dear ALA members!

Take one minute. Just one. And think of an intellectual freedom story that has resonated with you. Just one.

Got it? (If you need help, browse through the IF News posts)

Now that you have the story, was there a specific person (or group) that stood for intellectual freedom?

Now you have two options; 1)  nominate that person OR 2) send their state association or library/school this quick email text from the Immroth Committee Chair, Michael Furlong, and tell them that you thought they were inspiring and deserve the award.

NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2018 IMMROTH AWARD APPLICATION DEADLINE:

Just a friendly reminder! The nomination deadline for the 2018 Immroth award is Dec. 1st, 2017!

  • Consider nominating an individual who has who upheld the standards of intellectual freedom with distinction. Self-nominations are also allowed. You do not have to be a librarian in order to be nominated.

  • The Immroth award honors notable intellectual freedom contributions and demonstrations of personal courage in defense of freedom of expression.

  • Immroth recipients represent the importance of upholding intellectual freedom.

So before the holidays, nominate for the Immroth! The winner receives $500 and a citation!

Deadline, December 1st!

Online Doc Update from the IFRT Chair

by Charles Kratz on Sat, Jul 22, 2017 at 06:22 pm

From the IFRT Chair

I am honored to serve as Chair of the Intellectual Freedom Round Table this year.  I am very energized by the great enthusiasm I see in our committees and collectively as a group and staff we are ready to provide a strong forum for the discussion of activities, programs, and challenges in the intellectual freedom of libraries and librarians.

During ALA’s 2018 Annual Conference in New Orleans, IFRT will sponsor a moderated debate on the subject of “big data” analytics in the library world. The right of library users to keep private their individual use of library resources has traditionally been protected by federal, state and local privacy laws as well as ALA’s long-standing guidelines on patron privacy, but those protections may be challenged by the increasing use of “big data” in libraries.  More to come as the program is more fleshed out but please plan on joining us next summer for a lively discussion on this topic in which two speakers, representing opposing points of view, will debate the “big data” phenomenon and its possible consequences for patron privacy.

This year, the Round Table will plan and implement a two-year fundraising campaign that will raise funds for the Intellectual Freedom Round Table (IFRT) Awards program to help sustain the future of the round table’s awards.  The Campaign will include individual solicitations, ticketed fundraising events at the upcoming annual conferences in New Orleans and Washington, D.C. and the securing of award sponsorships.  The IFRT awards include the Oboler Award, the Immroth Award, the Gerald Hodges Award and the Merritt Fund.

Finally, please join our Intellectual Freedom Fighters Public Forum on Facebook.  The Intellectual Freedom Fighters (IFF) want to get Intellectual Freedom issues on the minds, hearts, and tongues of the wider library community. They want to inform you about these issues and provoke tough conversations.  The forum is an outgrowth of the ever-vigilant ALA Intellectual Freedom Round Table (IFRT), which has been protecting your freedoms since 1973.  Please note this is an intellectual freedom forum space which is a place to discuss controversial issues in a rational and well thought out manner. We expect people to have different viewpoints and opinions. Nevertheless, we expect everyone to treat others with dignity and respect.  Please join us in our discussions.

Thank you,

Charles Kratz, IFRT Chair
