The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

  • 1.  What kind of a future for SRRT should we push for and how?

In light of the discussion of pending changes to Action Council's composition that we've been told about, and in light of the Trump administration's stated intention of coming down on "left wing" nonprofits, and in light of the ALA's radical planning process to deal with its structural financial deficit, I have a comment than some of you will not like. I think that the issue of being able to vote for at-large members of Action Council is comparatively trivial, given what is likely in store. If it happens and we will no longer be able to vote for at-large members of AC, the work of SRRT will go on. Action Council will still exist. Members will vote for officers. Resolutions will be written and distributed. Various progressive projects will continue under the umbrella. All of these things, though, may face substantive threats in the coming few years, and I think that's what we should be preparing for. ALA's financial crisis and the threat to ALA's existence that the fascist regime is manifesting are a perfect storm, in which SRRT and its priorities are especially vulnerable. I think we should all consider that.

Thanks Rory. However in terms of advocating resolutions, that can only happen if there is a willingness to confront authority. 2025 was the first year in SRRT’s history when no resolutions were put forward at all. A restricted governing structure seems unlikely to foster the necessary bravery needed to meet the coming challenges.

I share the same fears as Rory regarding the future. That is exactly why I believe elections are important. The more representative government there is —elected by members — the better. What guarantee do we have an Action Council would exist at all without elections?
