The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

The Forgotten History of School Busing

A black businessman is attacked with an American flag during an anti-busing riot.

I'm sharing this link with everyone as a reminder that just 50 years ago, our country was enforcing busing in our public-school systems, including in Boston. I grew up as a product of busing in Iowa, and it shaped so much of how I see education today. For many of us, the goal was simple: to give every child the best educational experience possible, even if the path toward that goal was complicated and often painful for socially segregated communities. I often used my high school library as a sanctuary during times of internal conflict as a child bussed into an affluent high school.

Whatever your position on this topic, I think it's important that we don't forget that we, as a country, had this conversation-and that the reactions, the tensions, and the progress were monumental. Remembering that history helps me appreciate how far we've come and how much work may still remain.
