The Social Responsibilities Round Table works to make ALA more democratic and to establish progressive priorities not only for the Association, but also for the entire profession. Concern for human and economic rights was an important element in the founding of SRRT and remains an urgent concern today. SRRT believes that libraries and librarians must recognize and help solve social problems and inequities in order to carry out their mandate to work for the common good and bolster democracy.

    Hi SRRT Community,

Sharing a few recent advocacy initiatives that have rolled out from ALA in this past week. As we know, there's a lot coming out from the new administration and ALA's Offices of Intellectual Freedom and Public Policy and Advocacy are focused on addressing immediate challenges:

ALA to U. S. Department of Education: Book bans are real | ALA

The American Library Association released the following statement in response to the January 24th announcement that the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is arbitrarily dismissing student and parent complaints arising out of public schools' documented acts of censorship and discrimination:

New ALA Initiative Asks Advocates to "Show Up for Our Libraries" | ALA

Libraries are facing unprecedented challenges: the increase in attempts to ban books, elimination of funding for libraries, reduction in school librarian jobs, and undermining of the rights of library workers – including at the federal level. We must face these threats by showing up: for the people who work in libraries… for everyone's right to read freely… for a well-resourced library in every community, every school and institution of learning.
